THANOS VILLAGE
Information about Pylos (Pilos) and Gialova

Someone arriving at Pylos (Pilos), has the impression that he is somewhere on an island. The small town is built amphitheatrically on top of two hills, on the southern side of the Navarino bay-picturesque small roads, stone built steps, arches and huge perennial plane trees, the small pine forest at Niokastro, one of the best preserved fortresses in Greece.
Exactly opposite, on the northern side of Navarino bay, the village of Gialova is situated.
The sandy beach of Pylos (Pilos) is here - surrounded by greenery, lemon trees, orange trees, olive trees, wild vegetation clean beaches, very small bays. Picturesque paths in the countryside lead you to olive groves, the Kalamari Falls, the lagoon of Gialova, voidokilia, Paleokastro and the old aqueduct
.

Voidokilia is one of the most beautiful and captivating beaches in Greece. Here the natural beauty is so fascinating and dreamlike that whatever words you use for its description, the outcome is a poor result. According to ancient history (Pausanias) Homer's Pylos (Pilos), King Nestor's city was built. Big dunes surround the bay at Voidokilia and protect it from the harsh winds. Paleokastro -enetian castle- is situated on the southern side of the bay.
From the edges of the cliff we can see the cave of Nestor. It is here according to a myth, that Hermes hid the cows he had taken from his brother Apollon. When Apollon found his cows, Hermes in order to make up gave his brother a lyre made from the shell of a sea turtle, which even today lays its eggs on the bay of voidokilia.

Thanos Village is surrounded by hills covered with olive groves from which one of the finest olive oils in the world is produced. All the hills are ideal for strolls and exploration. The view, amazing on the Navarino bay, the beaches of Romanou, the Ionian Sea, Voidokilia, the valleys among the hills the small rivers, the ravines and the lemon groves are all unforgettable.
Travelling a distance of 4 km on foot or by car through the lemon groves you arrive at the beginning of the path, which leads to the Kalamari Falls. As you descend the path, you feel that you are in a tropical forest - very tall trees, so close to each other, the sun finds it hard to reach the forest floor. Water, rocks and small pools compose an amazing dream

The sun rays which peek through the mist, produce an exotic landscape on the lagoon of Gialova. This lagoon is found only 2 km from Thanos Village and it is protected by the European program for the protection of nature, "Natura 2000". Here you can walk amongst the natural paths with the local ecosystems.
The lagoon of Gialova is truly an unpolluted life shelter. It is the home of thousands of birds. The dunes around the lagoon are the only place in Europe, where the African Chameleon lives and reproduces, it's main characteristic being its changing of color, not only for cover, but also for communication.

For thousands of years now, the inhabitants of the Mediterranean countries have cultivated the olive tree and used its products for their daily needs. The edible olives and oil were used in their food, the leaves and the oil had therapeutic powers or were used as incense and the oil was also used as an offering to the gods.
Greeks based their diet on olive products for thousands of years. On Crete, in the south of the Peloponnese, on the islands of the Aegean and in many other areas, Olive oil was almost exclusively used as the fat content in food. This is why the olive tree is such a beloved tree, blessed by Gob himself and seen as holy , in the eyes of Greek folklore tradition.
The olive tree has its origins in the Mediterranean and greatly influenced the formation of a civilization in a place where some of the earliest human civilizations were developed.
Charming old and newer legends, along with ancient customs which still survive, prove without doubt the connection of the olive tree with both ancient and later forms of worship.
The development of a civilization can be seen through the people's diet. The identity of an area is shaped by the goods that are produced there. Wheat, wine and olive oil are the main products of Greece. All three are blessed and they have been used as a part of holy worship for thousands of years.
